SUMMARY:Monday 20th July – Virtual Meeting – Preparing for the Summer Break: Keeping up the Momentum
DESCRIPTION:How to plan and manage your job search activity through the summer period \nPresenter: Martin Garrity (Leadership Development Specialist) \nRegister as a member of Careers Springboard to gain access to this event and our free employment support\, including CV review\, coaching\, interview skills\, informal networking and access to counselling. \nMartin Garrity is the founder of Your Career Reimagined in which he coaches Career Changers\, Jobseekers\, Career Returners and Career Starters to get the right job for them. \nHis passion is helping his clients to understand themselves more deeply so that they can seek the role that’s right for them and their situation. \nHe’s worked in corporate HR roles for decades so understands the recruitment and selection process through and through.  He’s also a qualified Executive Coach who has worked with senior leaders in a wide range of industries – IT\, Manufacturing\, Publishing\, Social Care and Central and Local Government. \nJob search during the pandemic is not the same as before the lockdown.  Some organisations are understandably cautious about recruiting when the economy is going through a slowdown \nBut there are opportunities out there. \nAlthough there will be four weeks with no virtual Gerrards Cross meetings\, we cannot possibly take all of that time off from job search.  If we were in employment\, we would not usually be able to take four weeks holiday\, and the same applies to our full-time employment in job search.  We are not suggesting that you don’t take a break at all!  Only you will know how to strike the right balance. \nYes\, it’s tough to maintain our job search whilst others are relaxing and enjoying themselves with some time off.  Even tougher during a lockdown. \nIt may be more challenging because there won’t be the continuity of a Gerrards Cross meeting every week to keep us on that job search track! \nThe secret is to plan our job search activity now\, identifying and concentrating on the key areas which we will target throughout the Summer.  It is essential to be disciplined\, remain focused and reward ourself when we achieve those small steps towards success. \nMartin will help you by guiding you through his proven process to a successful job search journey over the Summer period. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Monday 13th July – Virtual Meeting – Linkedin - A Winning Profile
DESCRIPTION:How to Understand the Power of Linkedin in your job search \nN.B. was originally scheduled for June 15th. \nPresenter: Sue Smith (Lead Consultant – LJ Branch & Associates Ltd) \nRegister as a member of Careers Springboard to gain access to this event and our free employment support\, including CV review\, coaching\, interview skills\, informal networking and access to counselling. \nAs an experienced career coach\, Sue has supported many clients over the last 10 years with their career transition.  She has consulted across many industries\, spanning the Public and Private sectors\, with clients ranging from Senior Directors to Manufacturing Operatives.\nHer supportive\, collaborative style helps clients to identify what is important to them\, recognise their key drivers and motivators and gain clarity of their career objectives. Sue is passionate about partnering individuals to be the best they can and to realise their full career potential. \nIt should be a matter of fact in 2020 that possessing a LinkedIn profile is the ‘norm’ for those working in the majority of industry sectors.  The LinkedIn social media platform can be nurtured sufficiently to differentiate you from your competitors whilst ensuring that you stand out.\nThere are key attributes which must be included and maintained accordingly to ensure that YOU are found in key searches fulfilled by recruiters and organisations seeking to hire. \nThe LinkedIn algorithm will identify your profile in the top ‘X’ (number) within a search if the criteria being searched for matches with your profile.\nIt is very important to remember that once your profile has been created\, this is just the start of your journey and not the end.  To remain effective\, a profile must be maintained with content added\, altered and even sometimes removed (if you choose) to ensure that it reflects your current status.\nDid you know that a new section called ‘Featured’ has been added where multimedia elements can be included.?\nWe look forward to welcoming Sue on Monday evening to share her expertise and impart to the audience the latest tools and techniques that we clearly need to be aware of whilst we manage our LinkedIn profiles and keep them up to date.

SUMMARY:Monday 6th July – Virtual Meeting – What is the Recruiter Looking For?
DESCRIPTION:What are the expectations of the Recruiter when approached by the Job Seeker? \nPresenter: Dave Seddon (Director – IT Recruitment Specialist\, www.alphagroup.org.uk) \nIf you’re not currently a Careers Springboard member register for free. \nDave Seddon is a Recruiter\, Coach and serial Networker who takes a personal and relationship-based approach to working with individuals looking for their next role or working with major clients to find key roles.  He has gained over 30 years in the IT Industry across a wide spectrum of senior roles.  Dave firmly believes in treating people as people\, and has worked with Multinationals and small businesses. This experience empowered him to make the move to start his own ethically and people lead business – Alpha Group.  It has taken a relationship led approach to both candidates and clients and it works – so much so that he always needs more candidates for unfulfilled roles. \nThe business was founded on putting something back into society and hence gives 10% of its annual profit to good causes and charities.  It is about maintaining integrity\, being respectful\, investing in openness and doing the right thing in business\, not doing something just for money.  He happily leaves others to do that. \nDave puts in to perspective the importance of engaging recruiters in your job search process as one of your many routes to market.  It is not to say that your next role will be secured via a recruiter\, BUT\, if you choose not to utilise their valuable services\, by definition you are also choosing to negate them from a proactive job search campaign.\nRecruiters can get an undeservedly bad name when communication is not what the job hunter is expecting.  We must remember throughout this process that the client is always paying the fee\, the candidate does not pay a penny….. and to endorse Careers Springboard’s values and vision for its members\, the job hunter should indeed never pay an organisation to search for a role on their behalf.\nDave’s presentation will focus on how the candidate should engage with a recruiter to leverage most from the relationship and ensure a positive outcome.

SUMMARY:Monday 29th June – Virtual Meeting – Tell Me About Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Get the 60 second TMAY right! How to polish your response to this frequent and important interview question \nPresenter: Diane Richardson (Volunteer) \nDiane Richardson is a public speaker and brand change management consultant.  She has a wealth of experience supporting businesses to improve their organisation and brand reputation\, and has previously engaged with Amnesty International to transform their brand and communications strategy.  She achieved this whilst remodelling their entire communications process towards strong global and local B to C relationships. \nThe subject of TMAY (Tell Me About Yourself) is a vital tool which all job hunters should have in their toolkit.  This is the opportunity where you will be expected to sell yourself highlighting your relevant experience and in a succinct manner.  It is therefore really important to get it right and to create the best version of yourself for that ‘on-stage’ moment.  When a situation arises where one of your 3x TMAYs:  30 second\, 1 minute or 2 minute versions could be used as your pitch\, it is a very quick decision that you will make around which one you will deploy.  This will be dependent on a variety of factors including: who you are about to speak to\, the environment or location where the conversation is about to take place\, and how much time you and the other person might have available.  This is not an exhaustive list.\nThe content of any TMAY must be well rehearsed and internalised to the point where it is balanced between sounding scripted and appearing disjointed in its delivery.\nDiane will keep members in check regarding timing as she ‘blows the whistle’ to prompt the change from one person to the next to deliver their compelling TMAY.

SUMMARY:Monday 22nd June – Virtual Meeting – The Interview Itself
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on what happens at Interview & the strategies to compete  successfully \n Presenter: Eddie Maguire (Director – Changewave.co.uk) \nInterviewing is a poor description for the business meeting that you are going to attend to showcase your skills\, capability and experience to a new employer. It is a two-way process and you already have some great business intelligence on hand – your interviewer already believes you can do the job.  It sounds so obvious\, but you simply wouldn’t be there otherwise. Monday’s event focuses on what happens during the interview itself.  You’ll find out how to handle tough interview questions\, recognise and manage current interview techniques such as competency based interviewing and\, if necessary\, how to deal with any gaps in your CV. \nPreparation is key to minimising nerves and boosting self-confidence. This session at Careers Springboard will help you plan for the event and ensure that you are at your most resourceful on the day\, giving you the edge over other candidates in a competitive job market. \nWe welcome back Eddie as the speaker on Monday. Eddie is a change consultant\, executive coach\, people developer and Director of ChangeWave.  Eddie has been a senior leader in companies in multiple sectors\, leading and delivering change and technology programmes. For further information on Eddie please visit www.changewave.co.uk or click here for Eddie’s profile on LinkedIn.

This presentation was originally scheduled for July 13th \nPresenter: Andy Low (Director AJL Global Ltd) \nAndy is an executive coach in career transition\, who also operates as an interim manager.\nIn addition\, his experience includes CEO / Director level positions in Consumer Media.\nAmongst his breadth of engagements are organisations such as Cadbury\, Schweppes\, Tonka\, Hasbro\, Hallmark Cards and Mills & Boon.\nAndy has been an active volunteer and trustee at Careers Springboard for several years and remains as the current Chairman whilst we seek somebody else who would like to take on this responsibility in the near future to take the charity organisation forward. \nThe subject of networking is probably under rated.  Its importance nevertheless must not be considered just for those people who are talkative\, outgoing and / or who have assumed positions where they are continually engaging with a lot of people all the time.  No!  That would be a misconception around its purpose.  Networking is a tool from which each and every one of us can benefit when seeking to fulfil another position.  There is definitely a process to it that will help you to maximise best use of your time in order to target key contacts that will become enablers towards getting you closer to somebody who is a hiring decision maker within an organisation that you have chosen you would like to work for.\nNetworking requires practice and commitment for it to work effectively and to work for you.  If you sow a seed by having a conversation on one day with one person and multiply that up several times across several weeks and months\, it is very likely that people who are 2\, 3 or more levels of connection away from you will become within your easy reach of communication enabling a rapport to be built.  This is how to tackle the so called ‘Hidden Job Market’.

SUMMARY:Monday 8th June – Virtual Meeting – The Future of Work
DESCRIPTION:What is the future of work\, what do I need to know and how can I best prepare myself to position myself for success? \nPresenter: Rachel Dempers (Executive Coach and HR Consultant) \n\n\nRachel Dempers is an Executive Coaching and HR Consultant who works with leaders and organisations to future ready their organisation culture\, leaders and workforce. Rachel\, has more than 20 years of extensive experience in Human Resources in various HR leadership positions both globally and regionally at one of the world’s largest technology corporations and most recently was VP HR at Dell Computers. In today’s uncertain and complex environments\, leaders are required to have great endurance. As a leader\, a readiness to evolve ensures that your skills remain relevant. This talk will hopefully provide more understanding on what is the Future of Work\, what do you need to know and how can you best prepare yourself to position you for success. \nOur members will learn about how the various generations (Gen X\, Gen Y\, etc) over the last 75 years or so have evolved and can be compared with each other along with their traits and their trade-offs in terms of how choices which are made by each can be very different. These decisions are often influenced by our upbringing and what we absorb as we grow and become wiser throughout our lives. External influences are also a major factor to how we think\, how we act\, and how we engage in new concepts and with whom we might connect – with friends\, colleagues and partners. \nFifty years ago there would have been 1 or 2 generations working in a business and currently there may be 5 generations. By 2040 it is likely that 6 or 7 generations could be operating within a profitable organisation. Whilst the older generations can share a multitude of their experiences with their colleagues\, the younger generations can impart state of the art technologies and concepts which they may have embraced during their school years and in the early 20’s\, ready to weave in to their first roles and help to grow businesses. Essentially\, different generations can complement each other and therefore we can learn from each other. \nWe look forward to welcoming Rachel again at Careers Springboard.

SUMMARY:Monday 1st June - Virtual Meeting - Building a Winning CV
DESCRIPTION:How to make your CV an Interview winning tool \nPresenter: Julie Hodgson (Communication & Presentation Coach)  \nJulie Hodgson is a Coach who specialises in speaking skills. Amongst her various roles\, she fulfilled the position of Regional Training Manager for Black Horse Agencies and Bradford & Bingley estate agents. Julie then joined Spicerhaart as a Divisional Training Manager for 12 years followed by an 18 months period as Regional Training & Business Manager. More recently\, Julie assumed the role of Senior Learning & Development Specialist at Haart\, which was her last engagement as an employee. \nFor the last 3 years\, Julie has been running her own business in communication and presentation coaching and is based in Maidenhead. She coaches and mentors senior managers and trainers\, and delivers leadership programmes to improve the motivation and effectiveness of staff. In addition\, Julie engages in recruitment and selection and provides coaching observation and feedback. \nShe is a member of Toastmasters and is also an international speaker and is very proud to have delivered her Presentation Skills course to pupils at a Girls Charity School in India. \nThis event will help you to develop an award-winning CV. The dictionary definition of this is simply “A CV that gets you to interview”. Once at interview\, it’s a working document forming a potential agenda for the meeting. So\, it’s a critical and dynamic document. Whilst there are different versions of a CV that Julie will mention\, at Careers Springboard our main focus has been to concentrate on the reverse chronological format\, which has generally been the more popular version that job hunters adopt when they are searching for another position. This version is also well established and recognised in the market place too. Our members will be taken through the good and the not so good of CV creation\, which will no doubt show a stark contrast about what helps to sell YOU and what items do not add value. Julie will speak in detail about the content and suggested approach that is recommended for each section\, enabling you to perfect your own document and increase your chances of converting more job applications to an interview. \n

SUMMARY:Monday 27th April - Virtual Meeting - Confronting Your Anxieties\, Boosting Your Confidence and Getting Yourself Known To A Wider Audience
DESCRIPTION:Chair – Richard Lambert\nSpeaker – Terry Godfrey\nIt gives us great pleasure welcoming one of our current members to the speaker panel at Careers Springboard. Terry Godfrey will be talking about a great subject\, even more pertinent in the current climate \nTerry Godfrey started out as a Trader Support working for Kleinwort Benson.  He has since secured a number of positions with a variety of different organisations\, including: Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein\, then Saratoga\, followed by Greenwich NatWest Securities\, LIFFE and Man Group.  He then spent 15 years as a Senior Trader followed by a position as a Director for Rho Capital Management LLP.\nIt is important to identify anxieties in your life that may be having an impact on your mind.  Addressing them is key and confronting them head on so you can manage your mind effectively and to not allow the impact they would otherwise have on your job search campaign.  Some of these anxieties may well be connected to the fact that you are between positions.  This is perfectly natural.  Many of us have had these experiences.\nThis leads on very naturally towards enabling greater confidence within yourself.  How you go about your day-to-day job search activities will indeed be affected by the cognitive behaviour within your brain.  Your actions are steered by your thoughts in terms of how you might approach a task or activity.  This will be dictated not just by your current psychological state\, but also by your emotional and your physiological state too.  External factors including your lifestyle\, your relationships as well as your own expectations can all influence your confidence both positively as well as negatively.\nTaking on new challenges periodically will drive your confidence upwards.  When some of these result in clear success stories\, this will provide a boost to your morale. \nAs soon as our confidence is at a level where we feel much more in control of our destiny\, we can better consider how we assert ourselves to the outside world.  We engage in activities with a wider audience in order to get a positive response\, which isn’t always the case\, admittedly\, BUT this shouldn’t put us off maintaining a positive spirit to try again or to acknowledge that actually this won’t work.  Let’s draw a line under this and try something completely different.  People warm to people\, and people like people who are like themselves.  If you can appeal to a wider audience by writing an article\, publishing a book\, participating in activities and events that promote YOU\, your character and personality will shine and as long as you continue to maintain this impetus\, you will become very appealing to a broad cross section of individuals and organisations who may wish to hire you. \nTo register for this Monday’s meeting\, please go to ‘Video Conferences’ under the ‘Services’ section of the website and click on the link. \nWe look forward to seeing you on Monday night. \nPlease register for the virtual meeting in advance of Monday evening. The Zoom meeting begins at 19:30.
